Mission of the Society:
To assemble, preserve and interpret the history of Southeast New Mexico and to promote a great interest, understanding and appreciation of the area's past.
About the House:
The house, located at the corner of North Lea and West Second Street in Roswell, New Mexico, is listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
Construction of this home was completed in 1912, the same year New Mexico became a state. The architecture or style of the home is called "Prairie" or "Schooner," a design developed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the early 1900's.
Once the stately home of Mr. and Mrs. James Phelps White and a Roswell landmark since its completion in 1912, this grand house now serves as the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico Museum. Although the Historical Society had existed for many years, it was without a "home base" until the heirs of Mr. and Mrs. White donated the family home in 1976 to serve as a museum, with the third story serving as an archival repository. In 2007, an adjoining archival facility was constructed, and ever since, the museum and archives have operated in tandem.

We have no idea of the motives or reasons behind the post, but you can rest assured the HSSNM has no plans to close its doors and is currently busy preparing for our annual 4th Grade School tours, offering HSSNM scholarships and have a had an eventful past few weeks in general.
